Living With Dementia Helpcards
from the Alzheimer's Society

Introduction

This is your guide to using one of our three new Alzheimer's Society's helpcards effectively in your daily life. The concept of a helpcard was initiated and tested by people with dementia. Most people during the trial of the scheme adapted the use of the helpcard according to their own personal needs. Many of the questions below are from people who used the helpcards during the pilot; some of them were raised by professionals. We hope that this guide will give you an idea of some of the most practical ways to use your helpcard.

Why are there three different cards?

The different helpcards were designed to give you the flexibility to choose how to define your condition.

How should I use the helpcard?

You can use the helpcard by showing it to people in shops and local businesses. You do not necessarily need to use the helpcard; some people feel more confident going out and about when carrying a helpcard so that if they need to use it then they can.

What are the benefits of using the card?

It makes people feel confident, not alone, and able to ask for help at anytime. It can be very useful in emergency situations, and is an effective communication tool that informs of your situation.

Where can I use the card?

Use the card anywhere you want to. It could be for asking for directions to the church, making a person aware that you cannot fill in forms without assistance - the list is endless.

Who should I go to for further support and advice?

You can ask your local branch of the Alzheimer's Society to support and advise you. Alternatively you can contact the Living with Dementia development officer in your area, Phillipa Hobson 07841 368624 (North of England and Northern Ireland).
