Scientists developing 30-second Alzheimer’s screening test

Scientist are developing a 30-second test to spot the signs of Alzheimer’s which could allow doctors to identify sufferers decades before they show symptoms.

The screening process, aimed at people in their 40s, could be available in as little as two years allowing patients to take preventive steps to halt the onset of the debilitating disease.

The test, which would be conducted in GPs’ surgeries using a computer, could become as widely available as simple blood pressure checks.

By looking for tiny areas of damage on patients’ brains, it could identify those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s in later life.

Professor David Bunce, who led the research, told the Daily Mail: “The study lays open the possibilities for screening, early detection and intervention.

“The earlier we can intervene with people vulnerable to eventual dementia, the greater the chances of preventing or delaying the disease onset.” Read more…..

Painkillers ‘may ease agitation’ in dementia patients

A British and Norwegian study was carried out to determine the impact of pain management for patients with dementia. The research found  that many dementia patients being prescribed “chemical cosh” antipsychotic drugs could be better treated with simple painkillers – paracetamol.
