Living With Dementia and Making Decisions

Making decisions is an everyday occurrence sometimes it is straightforward  and needs very little thought. However there are times when it is good to talk things through, is this still possible when your partner has dementia? According to a report recently published in ScienceDaily it is important that you still continue to work as a team.

People with dementia can still make decisions in their everyday lives and with support from partners can continue to do so as their condition advances. This is one of the preliminary findings of a two-year research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) into how married couples living with dementia make decisions on a daily basis. Gardening is Good for the Brain

Gardening is known to be therapeutic in many ways – getting your vitamin D from being outside, exercise from digging and weeding and gaining a great deal of pleasure from seeing plants flourish from the care you have given. Dementia patients across the country may be spending long hours indoors but now growing numbers of experts say access to the outdoors, and physical activity such as gardening, could transform life for patients with conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The Importance of Exercise (BBC News)

What is good for the heart is good for the brain. Exercise can have a beneficial effect at any age to help protect against dementia. To help reduce the risk at least 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week is suggested. It does not have to be the gym – a brisk walk is a perfectly acceptable alternative. Whatever form of exercise gets your heart pumping and leaves you somewhat out of breath is doing the trick. Exercise helps maintain a healthy weight and blood pressure, and so is indirectly thought to reduce the risk of dementia. Read more….

Study Identifies Fish Oil’s Impact on Cognition and Brain Structure

Over the past few years there has been a lot of media coverage on the use of Omega 3, derived from oily fish, to help boost memory. This recent report from Rhode Island Hospital’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Centre sends out a very positive message.

Researchers at Rhode Island Hospital’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center have found positive associations between fish oil supplements and cognitive functioning as well as differences in brain structure between users and non-users of fish oil supplements. The findings suggest possible benefits of fish oil supplements on brain health and ageing. The results were reported at the recent International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, in Paris, France. Dementia Research Centre, Queen Square, London

Neuropsychology

The work carried out by the Dementia Research Centre in Queen Square, London although complex is interesting and informative as are the articles from Medical News Today and as such there may be issues that you find interesting:-

The work of the neuropsychology team within the Dementia Research Centre is directed towards identifying, measuring, monitoring and understanding the cognitive changes associated with degenerative disease and normal ageing. The term “cognition” refers to all processes by which information from our senses is transformed, stored, recovered, and used. So in our work, we are interested in assessing the impact of degenerative diseases upon a wide variety of human skills and behaviours, including memory, conceptual knowledge, language, literacy, perception, and thinking. Our research takes various forms….

Scientists Discover How Molecular Motors Go Into “Energy Save Mode”

The transport system inside living cells is a well-oiled machine with tiny protein motors hauling chromosomes, neurotransmitters and other vital cargo around the cell. These molecular motors are responsible for a variety of critical transport jobs, but they are not always on the go. They can put themselves into “energy save mode” to conserve cellular fuel and, as a consequence, control what gets moved around the cell, and when. Read more.

New Tests for Alzheimer’s

Scientists developing 30-second Alzheimer’s screening test

Scientist are developing a 30-second test to spot the signs of Alzheimer’s which could allow doctors to identify sufferers decades before they show symptoms.

 By Murray Wardrop

The screening process, aimed at people in their 40s, could be available in as little as two years allowing patients to take preventive steps to halt the onset of the debilitating disease.

The test, which would be conducted in GPs’ surgeries using a computer, could become as widely available as simple blood pressure checks.

By looking for tiny areas of damage on patients’ brains, it could identify those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s in later life.

Professor David Bunce, who led the research, told the Daily Mail: “The study lays open the possibilities for screening, early detection and intervention.

“The earlier we can intervene with people vulnerable to eventual dementia, the greater the chances of preventing or delaying the disease onset.” Read more…..
