Moderate exercise such as walking ‘boosts memory power’

Walking for 40 minutes a few times a week is enough to preserve memory and keep ageing brains on top form, research shows.
Moderate exercise increased the size of the hippocampus, an area of the brain that makes memories, in 120 volunteers.
The year-long trial, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed performance on memory tests also improved.
Exercise may buffer against dementia as well as age-related memory loss.
The latest work looked at healthy people in their 60s rather than people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. But the findings have important implications for ageing societies faced with a dementia time bomb.
“Even modest exercise may improve memory and help protect the brain from normal decline caused by ageing” stated Dr Simon Ridley of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust. In the UK, 820,000 people have dementia, and this figure is set to double by 2030. Until a cure is discovered, finding cheap and simple ways to reverse this trend is imperative, say experts. Tetbury Summer Show
The Tetbury Summer Show is taking place on Sunday 14thAugust on the recreation ground with gates opening at mid-day and the event promises to maintain its long tradition of being a great low-cost family day out. There is of course the marquee with all the wonderful exhibits of flowers, vegetables, cakes and jams. Dressed in full regalia, the City of Bristol Pipes and Drums will provide music and spectacle while the kids can enjoy a six-ring trampoline or challenge their parents on the nine-hole crazy golf course. There will also be ferret racing, a selection of children’s rides, a hands-on display of owls and falcons, creepy crawlies from Bristol Zoo and the extraordinary “Professor Crump”. Adding to the event will be the much loved dog show, displays of tractors, classic cars, motor bikes and model, boats/planes and lots more. Refreshments, ice creams teas/coffee available all afternoon for a fun-filled day out. Admission – Adults £2, Children 12-16 years £1, Children under 12 free.
Entrance to the recreation ground is: New Church Street and Hampton Street, wheelchair accesible (slightly bumpy as it is all on grass).
